"White Elephants" Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel Segment

After watching the latest episode of HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, a segment that intrigued me the most was called "White Elephants". As Brazil prepares for the World Cup next month and the Olympics in about 18 months, they have undergone extreme construction of its stadiums and athletic facilities . However, where is all of this money coming from, since they Brazilian government isn't known as an economic powerhouse? Also, what will happen to these stadiums once the World Cup and Olympics are over? What will most likely happen is that the facilities will not be used and they will deteriorate over time. The citizens of Brazil will suffer more socio-economic hardship and the money used to build the stadiums will have practically been a waste. This is called a White Elephant.  Also, White Elephants have occurred in the past, with the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece, their stadiums now are not used and their economy has suffered as a result of funding for the games.  I  have always loved sports and the unfication of nations through activities such as the Olympics and World Cup, but at what cost?
