Steve Aoki: I'll Sleep When I'm Dead on Netflix

EDM or Electronic Dance Music has hit the music scene hard for the last 6 years or so and there have been numerous DJs to displace their music, but the DJ who is one of the leaders in EDM is Steve Aoki. Steve Aoki in his new documentary, I'll Sleep When I'm dead, chronicles his life as a Japanese-American living in Southern California and the son of famous Rocky Aoki, founder of Bennihana, wrestler, real estate mogul, and much more. Aoki gives the viewers a glimpse into his life as a child and growing up under his father's shadow, being bullied based on his Japanese heritage at school, and trying to find his place in the world, until as a young adult, when he discovered punk rock music and later DJ-ing , and starting his own record label with some friends. Initially, Aoki didn't see himself as a DJ but as a record executive, but he found a way and his talent shined through. He also found mentor-ship and friendship with the late great DJ, DJ A.M.  Aoki began to gain notoriety as a DJ in LA, and throwing parties with his great skills. As the years went on, Aoki began to discover the EDM music trend we now know today. Today, he  performs at least 300 shows a year, worldwide. That means he literally has no time to sleep. The film  shows Aoki at the major EDM festivals, such as Tomorrowland , and traveling from country to country, studio to studio. But, the one thing that remains constant is his dedication to making music and Aoki recognizes his effort needed to sustain his success as an artist and the appreciation of support from the fans over the years.  It is great to see Aoki recognize his  humble beginnings and the effort needed to be a quality artist. Also, he is isn't a young man anymore and now in his mid 30's , he wants to make as much music as possible , and capitalize on all artistic and business opportunities.  This film was surprising to watch, I thought it would be superficial, and Aoki is truly a humble guy and loves his work, family, friends and just wants to share all of his talents to the world. My rating for this film is a 9/10. Go watch it on Netflix.
